About Heartland Senior Services

Heartland Senior Services of Story County has been in existence for 37 years, providing transportation, nutrition, adult day care, activities and outreach to all residents of Story County over the age of 60. While the offices and activity center are located in Ames, Iowa, the agency operates throughout Story County. Sixteen buses, equipped with paratransit abilities circulate around the entire county, bringing individuals to congregate meals, medical appointments, work, and shopping. These buses run seven days a week from 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Heartland provides nutritious meals to seven congregate meals sites throughout the county as well as home-delivered meals to county residents who are unable to leave their home. The adult day center offers a safe and secure environment for seniors who live alone or with family, but who need oversight during the weekday hours. For more active seniors, the center is busy with a wide range of opportunities: activities such as chorus, band, and dances; games of bridge, 500, bingo and cribbage; exercise classes including Wii, yoga and tai chi. There is even a writing group and a theater group. The Outreach Department provides needed resources referrals to those who can not come to the Heartland building. Services include the Bill Payer Program (an approved AARP money management resource), the Friendly Visitor Program, help with understanding Medicare documents, getting assistance in submitting required documents, etc.
Heartland is funded through the ASSET of Story County, United Way of Story County, Federal Transit Funds, State Transit Funds, Aging Resources of Iowa and private donations.
