Overview of Programs

ACTIVITIES & VOLUNTEERS
Program Director: Kitty Fisher

The Activity and Resources Program, known as the United Senior Center until 1995, offers seniors a broad range of activities that engages mind, body and spirit, such as duplicate bridge, trivia competitions, exercise classes, tai chi, chorus, day or overnight trips, and monthly dances.

Heartland’s Volunteer Program works to attract, place, retain, and gratefully recognize a large volunteer team in order to augment services county-wide, and to increase an awareness and “ownership” of Heartland’s services/activities through volunteerism.  Heartland’s Annual Volunteer Team numbered about 750 last year with approximately 27,000 hours of donated service.

HEARTLAND ADULT DAY CENTER
Program Director: Laurie Lybarger, R.N.

Heartland's Adult Day Center is a Medical/Social Model of Adult Day Care, offering medical support as well as supervised activities, peer support, companionship, and recreation. As such, the program is designed to assist physically or mentally impaired adults to remain in their homes or communities. These are persons who might otherwise require institutional or long-term care and rehabilitation. Primarily for older adults the program also serves those with chronic conditions, but in all cases is helping the client to remain as independent as possible, for as long as possible.

NUTRITION SERVICES
Program Director: Mary Ellen Metzger, R.D., L.D.

The goal of the nutrition department is to meet the nutritional needs of participants with a noon meal in accordance with the Dietary Reference Intakes, to maintain the independence and dignity of older persons in their homes through congregate & home-delivered meals (HDM), and implement medical nutrition therapy per doctor's orders. The HSS Nutrition Department maintains good food handling and sanitation standards while preventing and controlling food borne diseases, and assists in educating older persons regarding good nutrition which promotes good health.

OUTREACH
Program Director: Carolyn Dixon

The goal of the Outreach Program is to assist senior citizens throughout Story County, age 60 and above, with maintaining their independence and allowing them to remain in their homes or communities as long as possible through linking seniors to needed resources and services. Outreach staff provides one-on-one contact with participants and/or their families and collaborate with other county agencies on a client's behalf when necessary.

TRANSPORTATION
Director: Ellen Moore

Heartland Senior Services manages the Heart of Iowa Regional Transportation Services (HIRTA) in Story County. Story County ASSET and United Way of Story County allocated their funding directly to services for Story County residents. Funding to HIRTA is bolstered by state and federal funds. Participant funding is determined by the difference in outside support and the cost of a unit of service.

DEVELOPMENT & MARKETING
Director: Jan Williams

The Development staff works with the Board of Directors and staff to develop short and long range plans for fundraising, including individual, corporate and business donors and sponsors. The Director oversees and implements the plans set by the Board. The Director is also responsible for enhancing the visibility of the agency in the community through engaging community leaders and businesses, establishing one-on-one meetings with potential donors, and giving public presentations.

The Marketing Department works to increase awareness of Heartland Senior Services through expanded communications and marketing strategies.  The goal is to enable seniors to access programs and services for successful aging, and to advance overall emotional, financial and volunteer support of seniors through a better understanding of their needs and lifelong contributions.

FINANCE
Director: Susan Peterson

The Finance Department has manages all of the master records for the agency. These include following the compliance requirements of the various funding agencies, maintaining the financial records, processing payroll and invoices for payment, processing agency reimbursements. The Director oversees the front office staff which manages data entry, donor records, volunteer statistics walk in traffic. The Finance Department also serves as the Human Resource office for the maintenance of personnel files.
