Jan Sobotka:

For 10 years Jan Sobotka has been an active volunteer at Heartland Senior Services through many avenues.  She began as a Wednesday volunteer at Heartland’s reception desk at 205 S. Walnut where you would hear her friendly hello.  She then started using her artistic talents to decorate the seasonal tree, creating a homey ambience in Heartland’s living room.    Jan has been on several fundraising committees such as Heartland’s Annual Tea, Jewelry Sale, and Heartland’s 35th Anniversary Gala.  She has been a participant in the Heartland Variety Show. And last fall Jan became a member of Heartland’s Board of Directors.

Jan first became acquainted with Heartland when she moved to Ames in 2001, eight years after her husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.  One of the main reasons for moving was so they could be near the HSS Adult Day Care Center.   “I then became a Heartland volunteer to continue to stay positive, serve others, and be involved in the community,” she relates.  When her husband passed away last year, her meaningful volunteerism helped bridge the emptiness toward a new life.

Jan has always been an active volunteer, including volunteer work in McCallsburg when her children were young and many active roles within her local churches.

Jan, we appreciate your involvement in improving the lives of seniors and the way you lead by example.  Thank you for making the world brighter and more colorful for us in many ways!
