Heartland of Story County has been enriching the lives of seniors in Central Iowa for over 40 years.
The programs and services we provide are designed to help seniors maintain their independence, offer enjoyable ways to stay active and connected to others, as well as to support those primarily responsible for the care of their loved ones.
Our History
Heartland began as The Story County Council on Aging (SCCOA) in 1974. Ames community leaders were looking for ways to provide services to seniors through existing federal programs. Through additional community support, direct services quickly expanded to include Adult Day Care and transportation services, as well as congregate and home-delivered meals to towns throughout Story County. As need grew, professional staff organized outreach services, connecting volunteers and resources with those 60 and above.
In 1980, we started renovations on the former Wilson School at 205 S. Walnut Ave. This space included our offices, dining, and our Adult Day Center facility. Beginning in January 2017, we began a new partnership with Mary Greeley Medical Center to offer a combined Meals on Wheels of Story County program, allowing us to serve 230 meals daily! In 2022, this location was demolished and construction is under way to build a new facility, slated to open in 2024.
Our Mission
Heartland enriches the lives of older adults in Story County and provides support for their families and caregivers. Our holistic approach provides a vital link between those 60 and above to community resources including: a proactive Outreach Program; social, wellness and educational activities; Meals on Wheels of Story County; the Friendly Lunch Bunch; an Adult Day Center; and a variety of other engaging programs and activities.
